Back in 2014, we produced a print for Mike Tyson's Punch Out for Bottleneck Gallery in NYC that was a glitchy interpretation of Jason and the Argonauts, depicting Acastus's fall to the 7 headed Hydra in the battle for the Golden Fleece. We've always wanted to revisit this style, but it wasn't until the world shut down in March 2020 that we had time to have another go at it.
We spent over 166 days meticulously re-drawing, cutting up, and re-organizing every sprite from the NES classic - METROID! This time creating a complete visual representation of the first of three parts of Dante Alighieri's Divine Comedy - Inferno.
We set out to appease both literary and game enthusiasts alike, with such details as the levels of hell coinciding with the gameplay's order, as well as the order which the game's objects *should be discovered. The cantos are depicted to the left of their corresponding levels, while details such as the names of certain sections (such as the City of Dis and the river Styx) are detailed down the right side. Even the famous line that greets Dante at the gates of hell "Abandon All Hope Ye Who Enter Here" fit neatly as the password screen at the top of the piece.
